Focus on Controllable Factors

One piece of advice I've always given myself over the years, during both good times and challenging times when it comes to staffing, is focus on what you can control. This means focus on the process, your effort and the various stakeholders involved. In recruiting, there are too many internal and external variables at play to have expected outcomes. But in the long run, with enough creativity, optimization and hard work -- positive results are very attainable. It's also important to remember there will always be changes in the labor market, and as with anything in life, those changes are never permanent. So it's important to be ready to adapt during good times and just as important to have a positive outlook during challenging times. For me, recruiting is one of the most rewarding components of HR, as you are helping people pursue their passions, goals and dreams. And that is something that is extremely rewarding and has been a tremendous motivator for me over the years.

Recognize Setbacks as Natural

The first—and most important—piece of advice I would give to anyone facing challenges in direct hiring is to recognize that setbacks are a natural part of the process. Slow progress often reflects thoroughness. The goal is to find the right person, not just any person, and that often involves obstacles. If hiring the perfect candidate were easy, everyone would be doing it.

Next, I'd recommend that employers consider the candidate experience. Negativity and frustration rarely lead to superior results. In fact, letting demotivation take over can cloud judgment, causing rushed decisions that may not be in the best interest of the company. An engaging, positive hiring process, on the other hand, will help attract top talent and leave candidates with a strong impression of your organization.

Finally, if you're still dissatisfied with the results, remember that you are ultimately in control of the process. Take a step back and critically evaluate the job description and qualifications you're seeking. Ask yourself if you've clearly defined the ideal candidate. Minor adjustments to the search parameters could open the door to a wider pool of qualified candidates—and potentially uncover someone who's both unexpected and perfect for the role.
